Who Made the Cut
The 11-poster lineup, revealed by Oricon News, splits neatly into three groups. First are the regulars: Maomao (Aoi Yūki), Jinshi (Takeo Ōtsuka), Gaoshun (Katsuyuki Konishi), and the three top courtesans of the Verdigris House, Pairin, Meimei and Joka.
Second are four supporting characters Oricon says get more of the spotlight in Season 3: the boy Chou-u (Natsumi Fujiwara), Gaoshun's son Basen (Tatsumaru Tachibana), the numbers-obsessed Lahan (Toshiyuki Toyonaga), and Rikuson (Kōki Uchiyama).
The eleventh poster belongs to the one new face, Bai Niangniang (白娘々). Reina Ueda (Kanao Tsuyuri in Demon Slayer, Cha Hae-In in Solo Leveling) voices the character, a mysterious immortal woman whose rumors ripple through the country over the course of the season.
Each poster pairs the character art with a line of dialogue pulled from Season 3 itself. Oricon doesn't reproduce the lines in text, so you'll have to squint at the images for spoilers.
Locusts, Omens and a Mysterious Immortal
Oricon's summary of the Season 3 setup keeps things vague, but it does sketch the shape of the story. The setting expands outward, from the rear palace to the city streets and then to a neighboring country, and Maomao and Jinshi each face new trials.
Maomao's thread starts small. A locust turns up in her breakfast, and that little detail gives her a nagging sense that something is wrong. She sets out to find the cause.
Jinshi, meanwhile, has started facing up to his real rank and the responsibilities that come with being the Emperor's younger brother. Omens of a disaster that could strike the nation weigh on him. On top of that, rumors of an immortal woman leading people astray begin to spread, and Oricon says shadows fall over the Li Kingdom once more.
Behind the camera, Akinori Fudesaka directs Season 3 at OLM, with Norihiro Naganuma on series composition and Yukiko Nakatani on character design. Yorushika performs the opening theme, "Kumo o Nuke Kazashimo e Watashi Dake."
Free Audio Commentaries, but Only Until September 27
The second half of the announcement is a rewatch incentive. The cast audio commentaries originally packaged as bonus content on the Season 1 and Season 2 Blu-rays are now streaming on the TOHO animation YouTube channel, free, as a lead-in to the new season.
The catch is the window. The commentaries come down after September 27, 2026, which gives you a little under two weeks from the announcement to get through them. Oricon doesn't specify which episodes are covered or whether the uploads carry subtitles, so international viewers shouldn't count on English subtitles.
Looking Ahead
Season 3 premieres in Japan on October 2, 2026, in Nippon TV's Friday 11 p.m. anime block. Crunchyroll streams the series outside Japan, as it did for the first two seasons.
The franchise has a stacked calendar after that. The theatrical film, 劇場版 薬屋のひとりごと 亡妃の秘宝 (roughly, "The Late Consort's Hidden Treasure"), opens in Japanese cinemas on December 11, 2026. Further out, a live-action drama starring Mana Ashida is set for Prime Video in 2028.
