Kanbe and CloverWorks Lead the Adaptation

The production pairs director Mamoru Kanbe, who previously helmed The Promised Neverland and Elfen Lied, with CloverWorks (Spy x Family, Bocchi the Rock!) — a combination that immediately signals serious investment in the adaptation. Comic Natalie reported that the anime announcement came alongside a teaser visual, teaser PV, main cast, and full staff lineup all at once.

Kanbe is joined by assistant director Ayako Kurata, series composer Toshiya Ōno, character designer and chief animation director Jun Nakai, and composer Takahiro Obata. Obata noted in his official comment that this marks his fourth collaboration with Kanbe and that the two worked closely to find the right musical identity for the show.

Kanbe himself offered an unusually personal statement — not about the plot, but about his love of photography and the beauty of imperfect lenses that don't render images cleanly. For a director about to adapt a series about weathered, imperfect old books and the stories they carry, the metaphor lands.

A Rising Star and a Veteran Voice the Leads

Newcomer Riko Akechi (明智璃子) takes on the lead role of Shinokawa Shioriko, the antiquarian bookshop owner at the heart of the story. Akechi, affiliated with 81 Produce, described landing the part as "nothing short of a major incident" — a deliberate nod to the series' mystery-case framing. She shared that she first discovered the novels as a first-year middle school student, spotting the cover illustration through the glass of a rotating bookshelf in her school library.

Shunsuke Takeuchi (Einar in Vinland Saga Season 2, Aoi Kaguragi in Kaiju No. 8) plays Goura Daisuke, the male lead. Takeuchi praised the anime's photorealistic character designs and said the story made him want to pick up a book himself.

The teaser PV, posted on the Aniplex YouTube channel, already features finished animation and voice work from both leads, giving fans an early look at how CloverWorks is bringing the bookshop to life. The accompanying teaser visual depicts Shioriko reading quietly inside the shop.

From Bestselling Novel to Screen — Again

Biblia Koshodō no Jiken Techō (ビブリア古書堂の事件手帖) is a mystery novel series by En Mikami, published under KADOKAWA's Media Works Bunko imprint with illustrations by Hagu Koshijima. The story follows Shinokawa Shioriko, owner of Biblia Antiquarian Bookshop, as she unravels the secrets and hidden histories locked inside the rare books that customers bring through her door. Shioriko's extraordinary passion for literature drives every case — and every relationship in the story.

The series has surpassed 8.5 million copies in print and is celebrating its 15th anniversary. It previously spawned a live-action TV drama in 2013 and a theatrical film in 2018, making the anime its third screen adaptation.

Original author Mikami wrote that he had always quietly hoped for an anime but figured it would take extraordinary luck. "That wish becoming reality has left me deeply moved," he said, adding that the production team's sincere engagement with the source material gives him confidence to leave the adaptation in their hands. Illustrator Koshijima echoed the sentiment, saying the teaser PV brought back memories of visiting Kita-Kamakura — the real-world setting that inspired the bookshop — on a hot day before the rainy season.

Looking Ahead

The TV anime is confirmed for 2027, though no specific season or premiere month has been announced. Aniplex's role as the promotional hub — the teaser PV was published on the official Aniplex YouTube channel — suggests a strong distribution push ahead. Aniplex titles frequently land on Crunchyroll for international streaming, though no platform has been confirmed for this series yet.

No English-language release of the original novels has been announced, which means international audiences will likely be meeting this franchise for the first time through the anime. For a series that has sold 8.5 million copies and already produced two live-action adaptations in Japan, the CloverWorks anime represents its best shot at finding an audience beyond Japanese shores.
