A Winking Kanao Breaks the Internet
Kanao Tsuyuri doesn't smile much. That's kind of the whole point of her character arc in Demon Slayer — the girl who had to learn how to feel. So when ufotable dropped a new birthday illustration on May 19 showing Kanao full-on winking at the camera in a miniskirt outfit surrounded by flower stands, the internet did exactly what you'd expect.
Japanese fans flooded social media with reactions ranging from "She's winking!!!" to "Her expressions get richer every year — it's too cute" and "A shy smile plus a wink? She's basically an idol now." The "flower stand" theme gave the illustration a celebratory, almost concert-like vibe, and the whole piece radiates a warmth that feels earned after everything Kanao goes through in the story.
ufotable (Demon Slayer, Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works) has made these annual birthday illustrations a tradition for the Demon Slayer cast, and fans have noticed a clear trend: Kanao's portraits have grown progressively more expressive over the years, mirroring her character development in Koyoharu Gotōge's original manga.
Birthday Festival Merch Drops
Alongside the illustration, ufotable's web shop launched its Birthday Festival 2026 event goods — a four-piece collection built around the new art. The lineup includes a diorama acrylic stand that recreates the illustration in 3D, a decorative rosette, and two additional items designed around the flower-stand theme.
The merch is available now through the ufotable WEBSHOP. Given how quickly previous Demon Slayer birthday goods have sold out, fans who want the set shouldn't wait.
The Franchise by the Numbers
For anyone who somehow needs a reminder of how massive Demon Slayer remains: Gotōge's manga ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from February 2016 to May 2020 and has surpassed 220 million copies in circulation worldwide.
The anime adaptation by ufotable kicked off in April 2019 with the Tanjiro Kamado, Unwavering Resolve Arc and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. The 2020 Mugen Train film shattered records with over ¥51.7 billion (approx. $500 million) at the worldwide box office. Subsequent TV seasons — the Entertainment District Arc in 2021, the Swordsmith Village Arc in 2023, and the Hashira Training Arc in 2024 — kept the momentum going.
The franchise's current chapter is the Infinity Castle Arc theatrical trilogy. The first film, Infinity Castle Arc Chapter 1: Akaza Returns, surpassed ¥40.2 billion (approx. $260 million) at the domestic box office before ending its theatrical run.
Looking Ahead
The Infinity Castle Arc still has two more films to go, though release dates for Chapters 2 and 3 haven't been announced yet. With the first film now out of theaters, fans can expect home video and streaming announcements in the coming months — Aniplex typically brings Demon Slayer films to Crunchyroll after the physical release window.
For English-speaking fans of the source material, Viz Media publishes the complete Demon Slayer manga in English, and the entire 23-volume series is also available digitally through the Shonen Jump app and Manga Plus. All four TV anime seasons are streaming on Crunchyroll.
